I  Nny. Although admittedly a rather late-comer to the glory that is JTHM, I have no less enthusiasm for him. Jhonen Vasquez is a genius of unprecidented proportions for having the ability (and the fortitude) to say what he did through Nny and Nail Bunny and the Doughboys.
If you’ve never heard of JTHM, I suggest picking up the Director’s Cut, available (for certain) on Amazon. And I picked mine up at Barnes and Noble, so you can probably find it there, too. The off-shoot of JTHM, Squee, is also entertaining, but not nearly as well-crafted as the original series. Even the nonsense that Noodle spits is in some ways sensical in the context of what Nny’s been thinking and doing in the previous pages. And the fact that I can make that leap of logic either makes me a genius or absolutely insane. I’m not sure which. After all, it is a fine line.
I’m not normally one for senseless violence, but what Nny has to say about conformity and human decency is brought home much more clearly through your sympathy with Nny and his plight than anything else. And really, who doesn’t want to kill someone on occasion? This is the best therapy for that impulse I’ve ever come across. It’s so…creative! And if you imagine whoever it is in place of the nameless person Nny is currently carving up, you feel MUCH better afterwards. At least, I do. ^_^ But I may just be a tad sadistic.
